What I'm Listening To! July 22/20
Once a week I'm going to pick a few songs or albums that I've been liking a lot to share with you. Please give them a listen on your favourite streaming services or give their songs a purchase. Let me know what you think down in the comments or on twitter!
These are my picks for this week of July 22nd, 2020:
Glass Animals - Tokyo Drifting (ft. Denzel Curry) - (Single)
Glass Animals are a genre spanning band formed in Oxford, England in 2010. Pairing up with Denzel Curry (huge rapper born in Florida, now creating out of LA, his albums have done extremely well on the charts) to bring 'Tokyo Drifting', this song is superb and I love pumping it when driving around. My favourite parts are the huge kick drums, tempo change in the middle and melodic raps throughout. When things really kick off at 2:10 into the song turn it on up! Look out for the Mercury Prize-shortlisted bands new album due out on August 7th of this year. I'm really looking forward to it based on the singles released thus far.
Kid Cudi & Ratatat - Alive (Nightmare) - (Single)
From the incredible album 'Man on the Moon: The End of Day', Kid Cudi and Ratatat come together for a second song. While 'Pursuit of Happiness (Nigthmare)' is the better known project of the two, I've always had a special place for this track. Ratatat are a Brooklyn based duo that have some great instrumental tracks of their own that really stand out as well such as 'Loud Pipes'. Where I've liked them the most though is in their collaborations with Cudi where the sounds and lyrics mesh together well, creating a song that stands out for years on end. While this is an older track, every now and then I hear something like this on a playlist at work or on the radio and I become obsessed all over again.
Oliver Tree - Love is Beautiful - (Album)
From older to newer, this album was released this past Friday, July 20th to huge popularity. Oliver Tree, a multitalented musician, filmmaker and comedian, first came to my attention when I was shown the music video for 'Let me Down'. It's an incredibly quirky and fun song and the music video is definitely worth a view. From there I've listened to the album a few times and its a great listen; fun and chill, opening up new gems with each listen. I love his marketing campaign too, one of his promotional videos being a live stream of him attempting to ride the worlds biggest scooter, a Guinness World Record. 'Let Me Down' and 'Alien Boy' are my favourites so far but there's already more popping up!
What artists or songs have been listening to lately? Any recommendations for me based on what I've been listening to?
Thanks!
BPM :)
